Dental Assistant

Dental assistants help the dentist with examinations and fillings. The duties of a dental assistant are among the most comprehensive and varied in the dental office. The dental assistant performs many tasks requiring both interpersonal and technical skills. Tasks can include taking and developing of dental x-rays, taking patient medical data, patient comfort, demonstrating good oral hygiene techniques, taking impressions, providing the patient with follow-up instructions, and infection control.

Expanded function dental auxiliary is a person that can perform the same tasks as the dental assistant, plus place restorations and sealants, working under supervision and full responsibility of a licensed dentist.

Overview of Responsibilities

Assistants greatly increase the efficiency of the dentist in the delivery of quality oral health care and are valuable members of the dental care team. If you have strong communication skills, enjoy working with your hands, as well as your mind, and want a career with responsibility, dental assisting is for you.

In addition to assisting the dentist during a variety of procedures, dental assistants have other specific tasks to perform including (but not limited to): taking and developing dental radiographs (x-rays), sterilizing instruments and equipment, coronal polishing and taking impressions of patients' teeth.  Office duties can include telephone and reception, patient database processing,  working with insurances, and billing.

Education

Most dental assisting programs take 12 months to complete. Check with the school of your choice to see if they offer part-time education programs or training via distance education. Some dentists may provide hands on training as well.
